Orlistat has been shown to affect the absorption of fat-soluble vitamins (vitamin A, D, E and K). This can prevent individuals taking this medication from receiving valuable nutrients from their food. Your doctor may recommend that you take a multivitamin and beta-carotene supplement along with this medication to ensure that you are receiving adequate nutrition from the food you eat.
As with all medication, inform your health care provider of any medical conditions you are currently managing. Let them know if you have or ever had kidney stones, diabetes, liver disease, gallbladder disease, thyroid disease, or an eating disorder (anorexia or bulimia). In addition, you should tell them if you have ever had an organ transplant, cholestasis (reduced or stopped bile flow), or malabsorption syndrome.

Background:Xenical is currently the main medication used for the treatment of obesity. It belongs to the class of drugs known as lipase inhibitors, which work by inhibiting the absorption of dietary fat, by blocking the breakdown of dietary fat into smaller molecules. In the present study, the effect of orlistat (Xenical) on the expression of adiponectin and related genes was examined in mice. It has been shown that orlistat (Xenical) is able to decrease adiponectin expression in a dose-dependent manner. In addition, a study was carried out to determine whether the orlistat effect was associated with the upregulation of the adiponectin gene expression. The results are discussed in terms of the potential mechanism by which orlistat can affect the obesity process.
Method(s):This was a single-center double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical study. Mice were randomly assigned to either orlistat (Xenical, 120 mg orally, daily) or orlistat (Xenical, 60 mg orally, daily) daily for 12 weeks. Orlistat (Xenical) treatment for 12 weeks resulted in a significant reduction in body weight and a significant increase in body weight, indicating that orlistat reduced the obesity process. Orlistat treatment also resulted in a significant decrease in body weight, while body weight remained unchanged after 120 weeks of treatment. Orlistat treatment also resulted in an improvement in the basal weight changes and basal body weight changes in a dose-dependent manner. In addition, body weight and basal body weight decreased significantly after 120 weeks of treatment with orlistat. Orlistat treatment also resulted in an improvement in the basal body weight changes and basal weight changes after 120 weeks of treatment. Orlistat treatment also resulted in an increase in the number of obese mice. These results suggest that orlistat acts as an appetite suppressant and induces the activation of adipogenesis in mice.
